Vacuum packed food!

Buying premium cat food can be quite expensive so it is good to get as good of a deal as possible. We feed our kittens Orijen Cat & Kitten dry food and will use it in our example below, but this would be applicable for any brand really.
So how do you save money of cat food?


Of course by buying the large +10kg bags. The calculations we made are the following (ofc this can vary some from where you buy it and the currency used but the percentages and outcome will probably be roughly the same, 1kr ~ 0.13USD):
Orijen Cat & Kitten 2.27kg cost 379 kr which gives a price of 167kr/kg
Orijen Cat & Kitten 6.80kg cost 799 kr which gives a price of 117.5kr/kg
Orijen Cat & Kitten 18kg cost 1289 kr which gives a price of 72kr/kg
The 18kg bag is then 57% less cost per kilo than the 2.27kg bag, and 37% less compared to the 6.8kg bag.
Buying 18kg at the price of the 2.27kg bag would be 3006kr, and 18kg at the price for 6.8kg bag would be 2115kr.

Cheap Vacuum sealer used!

However, unless you got a very large kitty-household the bag will go off way before it was finished. All the vitamins and goodie stuff for your feline companions would be all gone by the end of that bag. Orijen 18kg bags comes vacuum packed and the use by date when opened is no longer than 3 months. That is a tall order for a kitten to eat through all of that! We have two kittens, but they would still not get through the whole bag in time.
So the solution to this problem? Get a cheap vacuum sealer! Maybe you even have one at home when cooking. This little machine will reseal the food in the package size of your choice. We used 28x36cm bags and it took 10 of them to finish the big 18kg bag.

Easy-peasy!

Even including the one time cost of the vacuum sealer (roughly 299kr) and the bags (roughly 50kr for 32 bags), you save plenty of money during your first use of the sealer, after that it's even better. On top of the money savings, your kittens will have fresh, healthy, delicious food every day!
