The breeder rules here mean that we can't have them until they're at least 12 weeks old, but we've visited them a couple of times and the breeder has been fantastic at keeping us updated!
| Mmm, *chew chew chew* Styx in action! |
As part of our preparations we've been watching a lot of the TV show My Cat From Hell. The show is about the eccentric Jackson Galaxy who visits people who have "problem cats". Typically, though, it quickly becomes clear that it's actually the owners with the problems. Of course, we're not expecting our kittens to be problem cats at all but there are some really good, simple tips which might not be initially obvious.
Some key things we want to deal with:
- High places for the cats to hang out.
- Lots of scratching posts, boxes, mats to save the furniture.
- Cat grass for them to chew, to save everything else.
- Lots of toys and play.
- A cat wheel (giant hamster wheel) so they can run indoors.
- Harnesses and leads to go for walks.
- Water fountain to encourage drinking.
- Wet or dry food plus real meat?
We're currently undecided about the water fountain. Apparently, all cats like fresh flowing water so a drinking fountain encourages them to keep hydrated (extremely important for cats). My concern is that if they are used to drinking from a fountain then we'll have to take it with us whenever we go anywhere. Of course, I want them to get as much water as they need but if they're happy enough drinking from a bowl, all the better!
Perhaps our most significant project is the cat wheel. They can be directly purchased but at an extremely high price so the current plan is a bit of DIY... let's see how that works out.
Future posts will go over how we tackle all of the stuff above, as well as much cuteness when the kittens finally arrive, of course!
